Alexander 'Greek' Thomson 3: the Egyptian Halls Part 2: the Exterior

Welcome to my wee photoblog on Glasgow, where we feature the joys and unjoys of walking and cycling through a fascinating, beautiful and often badly run city. For the blog's origin see the 'Introduction' post -
An alphabetical list of all posts so far can be found at the end of this post.
This post of exterior shots is the follow up to the one showing pics of the interior of the Egyptian Halls -
Well, 'hidden exterior' I should say. The wrapper is rather effective though at showing what lies beneath

Original moulding surrounded by graffiti

Now in Sloan Lane which runs parallel to Union St; back of Egyptian Halls at end of Lane

Glasgow has been defined in fiction as a city of violent streets - there's something in that, but Glasgow is also a mysterious, liminal city of old ghosts and hidden, forgotten paths - as much Neil Gaiman and Susannah Clarke as No Mean City

You can see what the lane looks like from 3rd floor window at previous post

Back in Union St

Union St has many fine buildings

Thomson Heritage Trail plaque

View down Union St to Jamaica St, where you will find more fine buildings, including Gardners Warehouse (1856), the earliest (and still loveliest) cast-iron fronted commercial building in Britain. The name 'Jamaica St' reminds us that the money which flowed into Glasgow in the 18th century came in on the back of slaves working in the horrific Scottish-owned slave plantations in the West Indies. Glasgow, like the rest of Scotland, has a record of ignoring its own history
Glasgow is famously a city of surreal sights, and this person carrying a large floppy gnome attracted little comment
But there is nothing more surreal here than the sight of one of Europe's great buildings wrapped in silence
This (from 1st floor) and the next pic belong to the previous interior post but somehow dropped off, so am adding them here - I do this on an old mac and editing is a nightmare - huge spaces appear and the pics seem to migrate of their own free will

This one should come after the 3rd floor window pic
